Dr. Mazen Hassanain
Managing Director – Saudi Vaccine & Biomanufacturing Project
Dr. Mazen Hassanain graduated from King Saud University’s College of Medicine in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, He then joined the academic staff of the Department of General Surgery at KSU. He went on to complete 5 years of training in General Surgery at McGill University. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC), a Fellow of the American Board of Surgery (FACS) and a Fellow of the American Society of Transplant Surgery(ASTS). He holds certificates in both Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery and Transplantation Fellowship and ASTS Kidney Transplant Surgery from McGill University.
He has presented 54 orals/posters at 35 national and international meetings, which resulted in 90 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Hassanain’s ability to balance a very busy clinical practice with his research activities has allowed him to simultaneously complete a Ph.D. degree in the Division of Experimental Surgery.
His expertise include Hepatopancreatobiliary surgery, Solid Organ Transplant, Liver Regeneration, Personalized therapy, and Fatty Liver Disease Biomarkers.
His successful academic career and leadership skills made him to be the Director General of the General Administration of Research and Studies at the Saudi Ministry of Health between 2012 and 2014. He is a Professor in the Department of Surgery, a member of the HPB and Solid Organ Transplant team at King Saud University College of Medicine, an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Oncology at McGill University and also at the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine.
Dr. Hassanain had been the Director General of the General Administration of Research and Studies at the Ministry of Health in Riyadh. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery, a member of the HPB and Solid Organ Transplant team at King Saud University College of Medicine, an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Oncology at McGill University and at the Hubert Department of Global Health at Emory University. Also an adjunct professor of Pediatrics at Baylor Collage of Medicine, USA.
His entrepreneurship skills were developed overtime. It started in 2009 when he founded Medicorp Ltd in Canada, followed by Saudi Physician Associates, Ergomed Saudi and Umano MENA in Saudi Arabia and most recently he cofounded SaudiVax Ltd a private entity focused on Halal vaccine manufacturing for the OIC.
Currently, Dr. Hassanain is a Consultant for Healthcare and Biotech at RPDC and Program Manager for the Saudi Vaccines and Biomanufacturing Center at KAUST
